Mr. Meacham served as SOM's Associate Partner and Design Lead for this project for the Oliver Carr Company.

 

The project was conceived as the gatepost of the 18th street entrance to the commercial city and as the cornerstone of a block-long redevelopment of the 1800 block of H street, N.W. which, because of the triangular "reservation" (park) in front effectively has frontage on Pennsylvania Avenue, a prime address in Washington.  

 

The lantern at the top serves as a beacon to locate 18th street on the night skyline. By day, it serves as a rooftop pavilion for the use of the MCI employees.
